DIRECTIONS: The park is located in the West Bremerton area. From Highway 3 take the Newberry Hill exit West. Turn left on the Seabeck Highway and then turn right on Holly.
The park has a play area, swimming area with lifeguards on duty, and we have reserved a group picnic area in a shady spot near the lake. It is a county park, so there are no pets or alcohol allowed. If you have questions please call Shereen Duce at (360) 876-0179. A lot has happened in the past several months, so we hope many families can attend and share "What's Happening" with the rest.
Marcia and Rob Rubenstein are expecting baby number 3 any time now and things are very busy at the Rubenstein house these days. Marcia and family are healthy and happy and anticipating a hectic coming year. With all this in mind, we would love to hear from anyone interested in editing the "UPSIDE" newsletter. We are also always interested in receiving articles, quips, quotes etc. anyone would like to see in the newsletter. Call Shereen Duce (360) 876-0179.
Kitsap is a large area and it is difficult to get information to and from all of its communities quickly and efficiently. We think it would be very helpful for all of us to streamline the process. We are looking for volunteers from each community to represent the families in their area. The representative would serve as a communication link to other areas on the Peninsula. We hope this will help to get more families involved in the Down Syndrome Society and provide more local support for families.
The following books are available for check-out from Holly Ridge:
Medical and Surgical Care for Children with Down Syndrome: A Guide for Parents.
Communication Skills in Children with Down Syndrome: A Guide for Parents, Libby Kumin, Woodbine House.
These and other materials can also be ordered from Woodbine House: 5615 Fishers Lane, Rockville, MD 20852 1-800-843-7323.
Another resource for Down Syndrome and many other topics for parents is the Birth and Life Bookstore: 7001 Alonzo Avenue N.W., Seattle; mailing address: P.O. Box 70625, Seattle 98107-0625; phone number: 206-789-4444.
"Like the spider, there are those of us who refuse to return to spinning, even when it would appear to be far more sophisticated to be without hope. Our rope, though perhaps frail, can still be spun with optimism, curiosity, wonder, love, and the sincere desire to share a trip to the stars. Our goal is worth the struggle, for in this case, the star to which we aspire is full humanity for all." Personhood, Leo F. Buscaglia, Ph.D
Nootropics: Several families who saw the recent Day One coverage regarding Dixie Lawrence with the Trisomy Research Institute and her experience using nootropics, an amino acid therapy, on her daughter with Down Syndrome, expressed interest in obtaining more information.
Diane Goodwin sent for transcripts of the program and the address of TRI. She received a large packet of information from TRI and has been pursuing more information on the therapy. Anyone interested in hearing what she has learned can contact her at (360) 876-7988 (please note - since this writing, Diane has relocated to another part of Washington). We will provide copies of the information for anyone who would like them.
Osteopathic Therapy and Down Syndrome: Diane Goodwin recently read an interesting article regarding osteopathic therapeutic treatment for children wit Down Syndrome and is doing further research on the topic. Anyone interested in the article can call Diane at (360) 876-7988.
Parents interested in sharing information on alternative therapies or any health related topic for children with Down Syndrome can call Diane Goodwin or Shereen Duce and we can get together at a mutually convenient time.
